I have to admit, “Mess of Me” is not nearly as effective as a single as “Meant to Live,” “Stars,” or “Awakening,” but it’s a good song. And though I think the chorus for “The Sound (John M. Perkins’ Blues) is really sophomoric and could have been rethought much better, the song’s not bad otherwise. And as for the rest of the album, it’s wonderful – much more symphonic and mature. It’s nice seeing Switchfoot grow up – I just think that they should have resisted attempts to include singalong pop hooks in their heavier songs on this record.
I’m so glad I bought this album.
